The Republic of Bulgaria
The diplomatic relations between the State of Qatar and the Republic of Bulgaria commenced on October 16th, 1990 when the first Bulgarian resident ambassador submitted his credentials to HH the Emir (may God protect him). Meanwhile Mr. Mohammed Ali Saeed Al Nuaimi was appointed as an ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Republic of Bulgaria in 2012.
The Qatari-Bulgarian Joint Committee for Economic and Trade Cooperation was formed in Doha in 2011. Qatar Airways began its first flight to the Bulgarian capital Sofia in 2011.
Mutual official visits between the two countries from 2007 to 2012:
- These relations between the two countries were culminated in official visits, starting from the visit by HH the Emir to the Bulgarian capital Sofia in 2009 and his participation in the Energy Summit. HE Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber Al Thani, Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs met with the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria in 2011 and Prime Minister of the Republic of Bulgaria during his visit to Doha in 2012. He also visited the Republic of Bulgaria in May 2012 and signed a number of agreements. HE the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr. Khalid bin Mohamed Al Attiyah visited Sofia in May 2012.
- The mutual visits continued between the two countries. President Georgi Parvanov visited Doha in 2007 and participated in the International Conference on Financing for Development in Doha on December 2nd, 2008. The Bulgarian Prime Minister also visited Doha and discussed the ways and possibilities of developing and activating the bilateral relations at all political, economic, investment and trade levels in 2012, and previously in 2010. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria visited Qatar in 2011.
Agreements and memoranda of understanding between the two countries:
- In 2012, there were a number of agreements on cultural cooperation, a framework investment agreement between the Government of the State of Qatar and the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria of € 100 million, in addition to memoranda of understanding in the field of health and tourism between Katara hospitality and the Bulgarian Ministry of Economy, Energy and Tourism, as well as the cooperation on agriculture, livestock and fisheries.
- A memorandum of understanding was signed between the Qatari Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Confederation of Industrialists and Employers in Bulgaria.
